Back-to-School Kickoff Events in North Texas: Rentals That Beat the August Heat

School starts back in North Texas while it’s still summer outside. That’s the tricky part about planning a back-to-school event here. Your meet-the-teacher night, PTA kickoff, church backpack giveaway or neighborhood “last hurrah” party lands in mid-August, and triple-digit afternoons aren’t unusual. Kids still want to run, jump and slide. Parents want shade and a cold drink. Organizers want the whole thing to run smoothly without anybody wilting.

We’ve been setting up events across North Texas since 1999, from Sherman and Denison down through McKinney, Frisco, Denton and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Here’s how we’d plan a back-to-school kickoff that actually works in August.

Start With the Clock, Not the Rentals

The single biggest decision is when your event runs. A 2 p.m. start in August asks a lot of everyone. If you can, push the main activity into the evening, say 5:30 or 6 p.m. until dark. The sun’s lower, the pavement has cooled a little, and working parents can actually make it.

If your event has to be during the day (a Saturday morning field day, for example), go early. A 9 a.m. start that wraps by noon beats a midday event every time.

Once you’ve picked your window, the rentals fall into place much more easily. Water rentals make sense for daytime. Lights, a movie screen and concessions shine after dark.

Water Rentals Are Your Best Friend in August

This is the one time of year when a back-to-school event and a water slide go together perfectly. Kids aren’t done with summer yet, and a slide gives them a way to burn off energy without overheating.

Our water slide rentals cover a wide range, from smaller slides and slip-n-slides for younger kids up to tall dual-lane slides where two kids can race to the bottom. Many of our combo units run wet or dry, so you can decide on the day whether to add water.

A few things to plan for:

  • A water source and hose. Water slides need a spigot nearby. If you’re at a school or church, find out where the closest outdoor faucet is before you book.
  • Power. Each product page lists its electrical needs, usually one or two regular or dedicated outlets. Check that your site has them within reach, or ask us about a generator.
  • Where the water goes. Put the slide somewhere the runoff won’t flood a parking lot or a building entrance.
  • Towels and a change area. Put a note in your flyer telling families to bring swimsuits and towels. It saves a lot of soggy car seats.

The Dunk Tank: A Back-to-School Classic

If there’s one rental that gets the whole school talking, it’s the dunk tank. Put the principal, a coach or a favorite teacher on the seat and watch the line form. It’s also a natural fundraiser: sell throws for a dollar or two and let the PTA keep the proceeds.

Our dunk tank has an easy dunk lever and a front window so the person in the seat can see who’s throwing. You’ll need a water source, a garden hose and a few good sports willing to get wet. We deliver it, set it up and pick it up afterward. On a hot August evening, the teachers in the seat may end up being the most comfortable people there.

Shade, Seating and Cold Treats

Adults stay longer when they have somewhere to sit out of the sun. That’s the difference between families who leave after 20 minutes and families who stick around, sign up for the booster club and buy raffle tickets.

Plan a shaded “home base” with canopy tents, tables and chairs. Our 10×10 and 10×20 canopies can be combined to cover a bigger area, so you can set up one large shaded zone for check-in, sign-up tables or a place to rest. Just keep in mind that you can’t cook underneath the canopies, so put grills somewhere else.

Then add treats. A sno cone machine is almost mandatory for an August event. We supply syrup and cups for 50 people, and you bring the ice (regular store bags are fine, and we suggest three to four bags per 50 people). Cotton candy and popcorn machines round out the concession stand and both come with supplies included. You can see everything in our tables, chairs and concessions category.

Rentals That Work After Dark

If you went with an evening event, you’ve got some great options once the sun goes down.

  • Inflatable movie screen. A back-to-school movie night on the football field or church lawn is easy to pull off. Our screens come with the projection and audio equipment plus a trained staff member to run it.
  • Trackless train. Our trackless trains don’t need a track, can run on grass or concrete, and hold up to 24 kids. A conductor comes with the rental, so your volunteers aren’t driving it. Younger kids who aren’t ready for big slides love it.
  • Carnival games. Tabletop games like Ka-Plunk and the 5×5 toss games don’t need power and can be moved anywhere. They’re perfect for a prize table run by parent volunteers.

Match the Rentals to Your Crowd

Different back-to-school events have different crowds, and that changes what you should rent.

Elementary meet-the-teacher nights skew young. Think bounce houses, combos with small slides, a trackless train and face painters. Keep things low-key so kids can still find their classroom and meet their teacher.

Middle school and high school kickoffs need something with a little more challenge. Obstacle courses are great here, since kids can time each other and go again. Interactive games like the Tug and Dunk (bungee basketball) and Human Foosball get competitive fast.

Church backpack giveaways and community events usually serve every age at once. A mix works best: one big attraction like a water slide or obstacle course, one or two toddler-friendly bounce houses, concessions and plenty of shaded seating.

Book Earlier Than You Think

Back-to-school weekends are busy for us. Summer birthday parties are still going, and a lot of schools, churches and HOAs are planning kickoffs on the same few Saturdays in August. If you’ve got your heart set on a specific slide or the dunk tank, reserve it as soon as your date is locked in.

When you call, have these ready:

  • Your date, start time and end time
  • The address and a rough idea of where each rental will go
  • What surface it’s going on (grass, concrete, asphalt)
  • Where the nearest outlets and water spigot are
  • Roughly how many kids you’re expecting

That helps us recommend the right mix of rentals and make sure setup goes smoothly on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we have a water slide at a school event?

Yes, as long as the site has a water source for the hose, the power the slide needs, and a spot where runoff won’t cause problems. Check with your school or district about any facility rules before you book.

Do we need to provide anything for the dunk tank?

You’ll need a water source, a garden hose and volunteers to sit in the seat. We handle delivery, setup and pickup.

What’s a good rental for a crowd with lots of different ages?

Pair one big attraction, like a dual-lane slide or an obstacle course, with a smaller bounce house or combo for little ones. A trackless train works for almost every age, and concessions keep everyone happy.

What areas do you deliver to?

We serve North Texas and Southern Oklahoma, including Sherman, Denison, McKinney, Frisco, Denton, Allen, Plano, Dallas, Fort Worth and many Tarrant County towns. Call us to confirm your address.
